The Global Campaign to Reclaim Peoples’ Sovereignty, Dismantle Corporate Power and Stop Impunity (Global Campaign) strongly condemns the recent military attacks by the US against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and declares its solidarity with the Venezuelan People.
In the early morning of January 3rd, the City of Caracas and three additional States of the Republic suffered military attacks by US armed forces that affected the civilian population and military forces. Furthermore, President Nicolas Maduro and his partner, Cilia Flores, were kidnapped by a US special forces brigade and taken to the US – out of any legal proceedings – to be tried by a US court. The president of the US, Donald Trump, has publicly proclaimed his responsibility for these acts in violation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela’s sovereignty and integrity, leading to the current state of shock and profound uncertainty with which the Venezuelan People are living, in addition to other regional countries.
These interventionist acts of predatory violence, under the pretext of “the war against narco-terrorism”, not only represent a flagrant violation of the fundamental principle of national sovereignty and the Peoples’ right to self-determination but also demonstrate how imperialists and their allies, including transnational corporations, use their influence to overthrow governments and illegally seize strategic resources. This has become a repeated pattern in different regions and territories, paradigmatic of how transnational corporative capital functions, how it advances, in articulation with the political elite imperialists and national oligarchies, in its aim to feed the processes of capital accumulation at the expense of Peoples’ rights.
Recent history demonstrates how global corporate power has functioned to guarantee privileged access to raw materials, energy and markets, eroding democratic institutions and national and grassroots sovereignty. In Venezuela, these dynamics translate not only into economic pressure and unilateral sanctions but also military interventions that suppress peace and regional stability. Peoples’ sovereignty is unnegotiable and must be defended against whatever attempt of external imposition that responds to the interests of profits and domination.
The Global Campaign calls upon all organisations, social movements, trade labour unions and affected communities to express their solidarity with the Venezuelan People and to rally in respect of grassroots sovereignty and to end all forms of imperialist or corporative intervention. Defending Venezuela’s sovereignty is inseparable from the fight against the architecture of corporate impunity, which exacerbates conflicts to consolidate its economic and political power. In this regard, we reaffirm our commitment with the international order that prioritises the Peoples’ rights, social justice and full respect of international law, in resistance to the predatory practice by the imperialists, transnational businesses and the States that act on their behalf.
